How to Fix the Wi-Fi Option Missing in Windows 11

If the Wi-Fi option has disappeared in Windows 11, first restart the PC, turn Airplane mode off, and check whether the wireless adapter appears in Device Manager. If the adapter is disabled, enable it. If it is missing or shows an error, reinstall the manufacturer’s driver. Use Windows Network Reset only after those checks because it removes and reinstalls all network adapters and may require you to reconfigure VPN software.
A missing Wi-Fi button is not always an internet outage. Identify which Wi-Fi problem you actually have
Open Settings → Network & internet and compare what you see with these cases:
- Wi-Fi is completely absent: There is no Wi-Fi entry or toggle. Focus on the adapter, driver, service, physical switch, and BIOS or UEFI.
- Wi-Fi exists but no networks appear: Check Airplane mode, signal range, the router’s SSID broadcast, frequency compatibility, and the driver.
- You can connect but have no internet: The adapter is working. Troubleshoot the router, DHCP, DNS, or the internet provider instead.
- Only one network is missing: The router may be using a band or security mode the adapter does not support.
Before changing Windows, test the same Wi-Fi network with a phone. If the phone also cannot connect, restart the modem and router and check for a provider outage. If other devices work normally, continue troubleshooting the PC.
1. Restart Windows and check the wireless controls
Use Start → Power → Restart, not Shut down. A restart reloads drivers and services more reliably when Fast Startup is enabled.
After Windows starts:
- Select the network, volume, and battery area on the taskbar.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Look for a Wi-Fi tile and turn it on if present.
- Check the laptop’s physical wireless switch or keyboard radio key. It may share an F-key and require the Fn key.

2. Run Microsoft’s Network and Internet troubleshooter
Windows 11 now routes many troubleshooters through the Get Help app. Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters, then run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. You can also search Start for Get Help and enter “Wi-Fi missing.”

3. Enable the Wi-Fi adapter in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for an entry containing Wireless, Wi-Fi, WLAN, 802.11, Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Broadcom, or the adapter manufacturer’s name.
- If it has a downward-arrow icon, right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If it has a yellow warning icon, open Properties and note the Device status error code.
If the adapter is not listed, select View → Show hidden devices, then Action → Scan for hardware changes. A faded entry may represent hardware Windows previously detected but cannot see now.
Do not uninstall Ethernet, Bluetooth, virtual VPN, or virtualization adapters by mistake. The Wi-Fi device is normally labeled as a wireless or WLAN adapter.
4. Restart the WLAN AutoConfig service
WLAN AutoConfig discovers, configures, connects to, and disconnects from wireless networks. If it is stopped, the Wi-Fi interface may not behave normally.
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find WLAN AutoConfig.
- Double-click it and set Startup type to Automatic.
- If Service status is Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, select Restart.
- Select Apply, then restart the computer.

5. Reinstall the correct Wi-Fi driver
A failed or incompatible driver is one of the most common reasons the Wi-Fi option vanishes after an update, sleep failure, or system repair.
Get the driver before removing the current one
On another connected device, visit the laptop or motherboard manufacturer’s official support page. Search using the exact model or serial number and download the current Windows 11 wireless LAN driver. Copy it to a USB drive. If available, also download the chipset driver.
Avoid third-party driver-download sites and automatic driver-updater utilities. They can supply the wrong package, bundle unwanted software, or make recovery harder.
Remove and redetect the adapter
- In Device Manager, right-click the wireless adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, do not select the option to remove the driver package unless you already have the correct replacement driver.
- Restart Windows. It may reinstall a compatible driver automatically.
- If Wi-Fi does not return, run the manufacturer’s downloaded driver installer and restart again.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Restart after installation even if Windows does not demand it.
7. Reset the network stack with commands
This step is more useful when the adapter appears normally but cannot connect than when the device is completely absent. Open Terminal (Admin) and run these commands one at a time:

ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart the PC afterward. The Winsock and TCP/IP resets can repair damaged network configuration, while the IP and DNS commands request fresh addressing information and clear the local resolver cache.
If ipconfig /release or /renew reports that no eligible adapter exists, return to Device Manager—the underlying issue is probably adapter detection or its driver, not DNS.
8. Use Network Reset as a last software repair
Go to Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset, select Reset now, and confirm. Windows will restart and reinstall its network adapters.
Microsoft warns that after a network reset you may need to reinstall or reconfigure networking software such as VPN clients or virtual switches. Saved network behavior can also change, so have the Wi-Fi password and any work VPN instructions ready.

9. Check BIOS or UEFI wireless settings
If the adapter is still absent from Device Manager, shut down and enter the laptop’s BIOS or UEFI setup using the manufacturer’s key. Look for settings named Wireless, WLAN, Internal Wi-Fi, Onboard Devices, or I/O Port Access and confirm the wireless device is enabled.
Do not change storage mode, Secure Boot, TPM, CPU, or unrelated security options. Take a photo of the original settings before changing anything. If you recently loaded firmware defaults, the internal wireless radio may simply have been disabled.
Check the manufacturer’s support page for a BIOS or UEFI update that specifically mentions wireless stability or device detection. Firmware updates carry risk: connect AC power, verify the exact model, and follow only the manufacturer’s procedure.
10. Decide whether the problem is hardware
Hardware failure becomes more likely when all of these are true:
- The Wi-Fi adapter is absent from Device Manager, including hidden devices.
- Scanning for hardware changes does nothing.
- The adapter is enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
- The correct chipset and Wi-Fi drivers have been installed.
- A Windows Network Reset does not restore it.
- The problem persists after a full shutdown and power-on.
On a desktop, power down and reseat a removable PCIe Wi-Fi card only if you are comfortable working inside the computer. On a laptop, an internal M.2 wireless card, antenna lead, or motherboard connection may need professional inspection.
