AirPods 5 Early Review: Should AirPods 4 Owners Upgrade?

AirPods 5 are a worthwhile upgrade for owners of standard AirPods 4 who want active noise cancellation, but most AirPods 4 with ANC owners should wait. The new model improves noise cancellation, raises dust and water resistance to IP57, and starts at $129 with ANC included. The more compelling $149 version adds on-stem volume control, wireless charging and slightly longer battery life.
This is an early buying review based on Apple's confirmed specifications and launch information, not a long-term laboratory test. AirPods 5 were announced on September 9, 2026, and reach stores on September 18. Fit, microphone quality, real-world battery endurance and Apple's noise-cancellation claim still need independent retail-unit testing before a final verdict.
AirPods 5 verdict in 30 seconds
- Buy the $129 AirPods 5 if you want the least expensive new open-ear AirPods with ANC and charge only by USB-C.
- Buy the $149 wireless-charging version if you want volume swipes, Qi and Apple Watch charging, a Find My case speaker, and one extra advertised hour with ANC.
- Upgrade from AirPods 4 without ANC if noise reduction is the missing feature you regularly need.
- Keep AirPods 4 with ANC if they fit well and their battery remains healthy. The upgrade is useful, not essential.
- Choose an in-ear Pro-style model instead if maximum isolation matters more than open-ear comfort.
What is new in AirPods 5?
Apple kept the familiar open-ear concept but redesigned the internal acoustic path. The company describes an all-new multiport acoustic architecture, next-generation Adaptive EQ and improved computational audio.
The headline change is that both AirPods 5 versions include Active Noise Cancellation. The previous generation separated the basic open-ear model from a more expensive ANC version. Apple now makes ANC the starting point at $129.
Confirmed features across both versions include:
- H2 headphone chip;
- Active Noise Cancellation;
- Adaptive Audio and Transparency mode;
- Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation;
- Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking;
- Live Translation on compatible devices;
- head gestures for supported Siri interactions;
- studio-quality audio recording;
- Bluetooth 5.3; and
- IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance.
Apple's launch announcement says ANC removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That figure comes from Apple's own controlled testing with prerelease hardware and software. Real results will vary with ear shape, fit, environment and firmware.
AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: the important differences
| Feature | AirPods 5 | AirPods 4 |
|---|---|---|
| ANC | Included on both versions | Available only on the ANC version |
| Noise reduction | Apple claims up to 50% more than AirPods 4 with ANC | Previous-generation open-ear ANC |
| Durability | IP57 | IP54 |
| Volume swipe | Only on the $149 version | Not available |
| ANC battery per charge | 4 hours standard; 5 hours wireless version | Up to 4 hours on ANC model |
| ANC battery with case | 20 hours standard; 22 hours wireless version | Up to 20 hours on ANC model |
| Charging | USB-C; premium case also supports Qi and Apple Watch chargers | Depends on the AirPods 4 version |
The upgrade is more about value and refinement than a new form factor. Existing AirPods 4 owners should not expect the dramatic physical change associated with moving from an open-ear bud to a sealed in-ear design.
Design and comfort: familiar strengths and limitations
AirPods 5 remain open-ear earbuds without silicone tips. That design can feel less sealed and less intrusive than in-ear alternatives, which many people prefer for long listening sessions. It also means fit is highly dependent on ear shape and cannot be adjusted with different tip sizes.
Open-ear ANC is technically difficult because outside sound can reach the ear without passing through a tight acoustic seal. Apple's improved algorithms may reduce more low-frequency noise, but buyers should wait for independent testing before assuming AirPods 5 will match a well-fitted pair of sealed earbuds on an aircraft, train or loud commute.
If AirPods 4 tend to loosen or fall from your ears, a similar-looking AirPods 5 design is unlikely to solve that automatically. Try the fit in a store or buy from a seller with a clear return policy.
Noise cancellation: the biggest reason to upgrade
Putting ANC in the $129 model is the most important change. It makes AirPods 5 attractive to owners of AirPods 4 without ANC, AirPods 3 and older standard AirPods.
Apple also includes Adaptive Audio, which blends noise cancellation and Transparency mode according to the environment. Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when the wearer starts speaking. These features make ANC more practical for an office or street than a simple all-or-nothing noise-blocking switch.
Owners of AirPods 4 with ANC face a different decision. A claimed 50% improvement sounds large, but it is still a comparison within open-ear earbuds. If the existing pair already handles office hum and moderate commuting noise, the improvement alone may not justify replacing a one- or two-year-old product.
Sound quality: promising, but not yet independently proven
Apple says the new multiport architecture and Adaptive EQ produce richer, more detailed sound across a wider range of ear geometries. Those changes could improve bass consistency and clarity when the earbuds do not form a seal.
However, frequency balance, distortion and perceived detail cannot be judged from a specification sheet. Early coverage has also treated the sound upgrade as something that must be heard on retail hardware. Do not preorder solely because of the phrase “re-engineered sound quality.”
The sensible expectation is refinement rather than a guaranteed transformation. The H2 chip remains, while the acoustic chamber and processing have changed.
Battery life: the two versions are meaningfully different
Apple's technical specifications list up to four hours of listening with ANC for the standard AirPods 5 and up to 20 hours including the USB-C case.
The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case reach up to five hours on one charge with ANC and 22 hours with the case. Both versions provide about one hour of listening after five minutes in the case.
These figures make the premium model easier to recommend. The extra hour per charge matters during flights or long work sessions, while the $20 price difference also buys more charging options and physical volume control.
Battery claims are measured under defined conditions. High volume, calls, spatial audio, weak Bluetooth connections and repeated switching between devices can reduce actual endurance.
The $149 model is the better long-term value
The base model is not incomplete: it has ANC, the same H2 chip and the main listening features. It is the right choice when price matters and a USB-C cable is always nearby.
Still, the $149 version adds several conveniences for only $20:
- swipe up or down on the stem to change volume;
- one additional advertised hour with ANC;
- two additional advertised hours from the case;
- Qi wireless charging;
- Apple Watch charger support; and
- a case speaker for Find My.
Volume control is especially valuable because it removes a common reason to reach for the phone. For buyers planning to keep the earbuds for several years, the premium version offers the more complete daily experience.
Any regular USB-C power source should be sufficient for the case; AirPods do not require a high-wattage adapter. Our USB-C charger wattage guide explains why a device safely negotiates the power it needs.
Live Translation and Siri AI need a compatible iPhone
AirPods 5 support Live Translation, but the earbuds do not perform the entire task independently. Apple says the feature requires a compatible Apple device with current software, current AirPods firmware and Apple Intelligence enabled. Language and regional availability vary.
Siri AI begins rolling out in beta with iOS 27 on September 14, initially in English on supported hardware. Some features will not be available in every region, and Apple's most advanced on-device Siri functions require specific recent iPhones.
That makes Live Translation a weak reason to replace a recent pair by itself. Apple says the capability is available across compatible AirPods models, not exclusively on AirPods 5. Android users can use AirPods as standard Bluetooth earbuds, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited.
Android users who mainly want live language help may find a phone-based tool more flexible. See our guide to keeping Google Translate Live Translation running in the background.
Durability improves to IP57
AirPods 5 earbuds and case carry an IP57 rating, up from IP54 on AirPods 4. The first digit indicates stronger dust protection; the second indicates improved water resistance under defined laboratory conditions.
This is useful for exercise, dusty environments and accidental exposure, but IP57 does not make AirPods suitable for swimming. Resistance can decline with normal wear, and liquid damage should not be treated as impossible.
Who should upgrade?
Upgrade from AirPods 4 without ANC
This is the clearest upgrade case. You gain ANC, improved durability and a revised acoustic system while keeping the open-ear style. Choose the $149 version if volume swipes and wireless charging matter.
Wait if you own AirPods 4 with ANC
Keep the current pair unless its battery has degraded, you frequently need stronger noise reduction, or the lack of stem volume control is a daily annoyance. The generation-to-generation changes are useful but do not make AirPods 4 obsolete.
Upgrade from AirPods 3 or older
AirPods 5 provide a broader set of listening modes, USB-C charging, improved resistance and newer computational features. Check physical fit first, because feature gains do not help if the open-ear shape is unstable in your ears.
Skip them if you need maximum isolation
A sealed in-ear model with correctly sized tips will usually be the safer choice for blocking substantial outside noise. AirPods 5 prioritize an open, pressure-free fit rather than the strongest possible physical isolation.
Should you preorder AirPods 5?
Preordering is reasonable for someone already committed to buying open-ear AirPods and satisfied with the fit of AirPods 4. The $129 price is competitive for Apple earbuds with ANC, and the $149 version has the strongest feature-to-price balance.
Everyone else should wait until after September 18. Independent tests can answer the questions a launch page cannot:
- How much better is ANC on an aircraft and public transport?
- Does the redesigned acoustic system noticeably improve bass and detail?
- How clear are calls in wind and traffic?
- Does battery life approach Apple's numbers?
- Has the fit changed enough to affect comfort or stability?
Final early-review score
Early rating: 8.5/10 for new buyers, 6.5/10 as an upgrade from AirPods 4 with ANC.
AirPods 5 fix the standard lineup's biggest pricing problem by including ANC at $129. The $149 version is the standout because it adds volume control, wireless charging, better Find My support and longer battery life without a large price jump.
The product looks excellent on paper, but buyers should keep the launch status in mind: Apple has provided detailed specifications and internal test claims, while full independent retail reviews are still pending. For AirPods 4 ANC owners, waiting is the smarter decision. For older-AirPods owners who prefer an open-ear design, AirPods 5 are shaping up to be the strongest upgrade in years.
