How to Use TikTok Voice Comments, Comment Polls and Photo Carousels

To leave a voice comment on TikTok, open a video’s comments, tap the microphone in the comment box, record up to 60 seconds, review it and post. TikTok announced Voice Comments on September 3, 2026, alongside Comment Polls, nine-photo carousel comments and Live Photo comments. Voice Comments are rolling out globally to accounts aged 18 and older, so the microphone may not appear immediately for everyone.
The new formats turn comment threads into richer conversations, but each has different eligibility and rollout rules. This guide explains how to use them, what is available now and how to troubleshoot missing buttons.
TikTok’s four new comment features at a glance
| Feature | What it does | Availability announced September 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Voice Comments | Records an audio reply up to 60 seconds | Rolling out globally over the next month; accounts 18+ |
| Comment Polls | Lets a creator add up to five voting options under their own video | Available globally |
| Photo Carousel Comments | Adds as many as nine photos to one comment | Rolling out globally over the next month |
| Live Photo Comments | Posts a Live Photo with a short motion preview | Available globally |
These limits and dates come from TikTok’s official Voice, Polls and Carousels announcement. TikTok says more than 1.7 billion comments are shared on the platform each day, which helps explain why it is investing in comments as a creation surface rather than treating them as text-only replies.
How to use Voice Comments on TikTok
- Update TikTok to the latest version available for your phone.
- Open the video you want to respond to.
- Tap the Comments button on the side of the video.
- Tap the microphone icon inside the comment box.
- Allow microphone access if TikTok asks for permission.
- Record your reply. The maximum length is 60 seconds.
- Listen to the recording before posting, if the preview option appears.
- Post the voice comment. Other viewers can tap it to listen.
A voice comment is public wherever an ordinary comment would be visible. Do not record phone numbers, addresses, payment details or private conversations. Background speech can also be captured, so listen once before publishing.
Can anyone leave a TikTok voice comment?
Not yet. TikTok says Voice Comments are for accounts aged 18 or older and are rolling out worldwide over the month following the September 3 announcement. An eligible adult account may still receive the feature later than another account in the same country.
The ability to comment also depends on the video owner’s settings. If comments are disabled, restricted to selected audiences or filtered, the microphone cannot override those controls.
How to create a Comment Poll on TikTok
Comment Polls are designed for creators to place a vote beneath their own video. They are not a general poll button for every viewer on every post.
- Open one of your own published TikTok videos.
- Open its comment section.
- Tap the poll icon in the comment box.
- Write a clear question.
- Add up to five answer choices.
- Choose how long the voting period should remain open.
- Review the options carefully, then publish the poll comment.
Results update inside the comment section, allowing the creator to follow the vote without sending viewers to a separate Story or website.
Good uses for a comment poll
- Choose the topic for the next video.
- Vote between two product colors or designs.
- Pick the next recipe, tutorial or challenge.
- Ask viewers which part of a guide needs a follow-up.
- Collect a quick preference before a livestream.
Keep choices short and mutually exclusive. A poll with five versions of nearly the same answer produces weak feedback, even if it attracts votes.
How to add up to nine photos in one TikTok comment
Photo Carousel Comments let a viewer attach several related images to a single reply instead of posting them one by one.
- Open the comment box beneath a video.
- Tap the photo or gallery control.
- Grant photo-library access if needed.
- Select up to nine images.
- Check their order and remove anything unintended.
- Add context in text if TikTok offers a caption field, then post.
The feature is useful for before-and-after sequences, travel reactions, step-by-step results and product examples. It is different from a TikTok Photo Mode post: the carousel lives inside another video’s comment thread.
How Live Photo Comments work
On a compatible phone, select a Live Photo from the camera roll when adding a photo comment. TikTok preserves a brief burst of motion so viewers see more than a static frame. Live Photo Comments were announced as globally available, although device support and local app versions can still affect what appears.
Before uploading, hold the Live Photo in your gallery and review the entire motion segment. A harmless still image can contain an unintended face, screen or spoken moment in the frames around it.
Why the microphone or poll button is missing
1. The rollout has not reached your account
This is the most likely reason for a missing Voice Comments or Photo Carousel Comments control during September 2026. TikTok described both as month-long global rollouts, not same-day releases. Reinstalling the app repeatedly will not force a server-side feature flag.
2. Your account is under 18
Voice Comments require an account aged 18 or older. Do not enter a false birth date to bypass the restriction. If TikTok has an incorrect age on the account, use its official age-support process rather than opening a replacement account with false information.
3. The creator has restricted comments
The video owner can limit who may comment, filter comments or turn them off. TikTok’s official comment management guide explains these controls. Test the feature under a different public video before assuming your app is broken.
4. TikTok lacks microphone or photo permission
On iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable TikTok. On Android, open Settings → Apps → TikTok → Permissions and allow the microphone. Use the equivalent Photos permission for carousel and Live Photo comments.
Grant only the access you need. Where the operating system offers selected-photo access, it is safer than exposing the entire library.
5. The app is outdated or its cache is stuck
Install the current TikTok update, close the app completely and reopen it. If the interface still behaves incorrectly, use TikTok’s in-app cache-clearing option before reinstalling. Save drafts first because drafts are normally stored on the device and can disappear when the app is removed.
How creators should moderate richer comments
Audio and multi-photo replies carry more information than text, which also creates more moderation work. Review who can comment before encouraging a large response campaign.
- Turn on filters for unwanted comments and keywords.
- Use Creator Care Mode where available.
- Report abusive voice or photo comments rather than arguing with them.
- Remove replies that expose another person’s private information.
- State whether poll results are advisory or will determine the outcome.
TikTok lets creators review filtered comments and approve or delete them. Its comments help page also explains bulk management and filtering tools.
Practical ideas for creators and brands
Use Voice Comments when tone or performance adds value—such as pronunciation, music reactions or a brief personal answer. Use polls for a bounded decision. Use photo carousels when evidence needs multiple frames. The format should make the reply clearer, not merely newer.
For planned campaigns, include the first comment in your publishing checklist. You can schedule the main post and then add a poll once it is live. Our guide to scheduling social media posts with Buffer explains how to organize the publishing queue.
If your For You page becomes dominated by content generated from a comment campaign, you can retrain recommendations without deleting your account. Follow our guide to resetting the TikTok For You feed.
Bottom line
TikTok’s September 2026 comment update adds four distinct tools: 60-second voice replies for adults, creator polls with up to five choices, nine-image carousel comments and Live Photo comments. Polls and Live Photos are available globally, while voice and carousel comments are rolling out over the month.
If a button is missing, check eligibility, permissions, comment settings and app updates—then allow time for the rollout. Once available, use the new formats deliberately and review every audio or photo reply for private information before posting.
