How to Stop Apps From Draining Battery in the Background on Android

To stop an Android app draining battery in the background, first identify it in Settings > Battery > Battery usage, then restrict its background activity or remove permissions it does not need. Do not close every app repeatedly: Android manages normal background processes automatically, and aggressive task killing can sometimes increase power use when apps reopen.
Menu names vary between Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and other phones, but the diagnostic sequence is broadly the same.
1. Confirm which app is using the battery
Charge the phone, use it normally for several hours, then open the battery-usage screen. Look for an app consuming an unusually large share compared with the time you actively used it.
High use is not always abnormal. Navigation, video calls, games, cameras and music streaming legitimately consume power. The stronger warning signs are:
- Heavy use while the app was barely opened.
- The phone remaining warm while idle.
- A sudden change after an app or system update.
- Rapid overnight loss without expected syncing or backups.
- A weak signal causing a communication app to retry constantly.
Restart the phone once before making major changes. A temporary process can occasionally become stuck.
2. Restrict background battery use for the problem app
Open the app’s information page, then look for Battery, App battery usage or Background usage. Depending on the phone, you may see options such as Unrestricted, Optimized and Restricted.
Start with Optimized. Use Restricted only for an app that continues to misbehave and does not need timely background updates.
Restriction can delay notifications, uploads, location tracking, health data or message delivery. Do not restrict an alarm, accessibility, medical, security or messaging app without checking what will stop working.
3. Review background data
Some apps repeatedly refresh over mobile data or Wi-Fi. In the app’s settings, look for Mobile data & Wi-Fi, Background data or Data usage.
Disabling background data can help an app that does not need to sync until you open it. It is a poor choice for email, messaging, cloud backup or device-finding services if you rely on immediate updates.
When traveling, unstable mobile coverage can increase battery use because the phone searches for and reconnects to networks. Airplane mode is useful only when you genuinely do not need connectivity.
4. Check location permission
An app set to access location “all the time” can remain active more often than one allowed access only while in use.
Go to Settings > Location > App permissions and change unnecessary access to While using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow. Keep background location for functions that truly require it, such as navigation sharing, safety tools or geofencing that you knowingly use.
Also review access to nearby devices, Bluetooth and physical-activity sensors. Permissions should match the feature you expect from the app.
5. Use Battery Saver appropriately
Google explains that Battery Saver limits or turns off some background activity, network connections and visual effects. It is useful when the charge is low or when you need the phone to last longer.
You can normally schedule Battery Saver to activate at a chosen percentage. Avoid leaving extreme power-saving modes enabled if they prevent important communications; use them deliberately rather than treating them as a permanent fix for one faulty app.
6. Update the app and Android
A battery problem can come from a bug that the developer has already corrected. Update the problem app through the Play Store and install stable Android security and system updates available for your phone.
After a major system update, the phone may temporarily use more power while optimizing apps, rebuilding indexes or syncing. If abnormal drain continues for several days, continue troubleshooting.
7. Clear the app cache—or reinstall carefully
If one app remains abnormal:
- Force stop it.
- Open Storage & cache.
- Clear the cache.
- Restart the phone and test again.
Clearing storage is more disruptive: it can sign you out and remove local app data. Confirm that important information is synced or backed up first. Reinstalling can help corrupted app files, but it should not be the first step.

8. Check charging hardware and battery age
Background apps are not the only reason a phone runs down. A damaged cable, underpowered adapter, dirty port, heat or an aging battery can change charging behavior.

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. If the phone shuts down at a high percentage, swells, becomes dangerously hot or has very poor runtime after software troubleshooting, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. A swollen battery requires prompt professional attention.
9. Avoid common battery myths
You do not need to force-stop every app after using it. You also do not need to drain a modern Android battery to zero to “teach” it its capacity. Google says users can charge as much or as little as needed.
Screen brightness, high refresh rate, weak signal, always-on display and long screen-on time can exceed background-app consumption. Compare the full battery report before blaming the first app in the list.
A safe troubleshooting order
Use this sequence:
- Restart and observe.
- Identify the real battery consumer.
- Update the app and Android.
- remove unnecessary location, sensor and data permissions.
- Set the app to Optimized.
